2004 PROGRAMS

January 6, 2004 Speaker: David Rushing, YCT State Chairman (Young Conservatives of Texas)

David is a recent graduate of Texas A&M and is now in Law School.  He will relate issues that concern young conservatives, and comment on the Texas A&M admission policies that were prompted by the "cookie sales" on campus.

 

January 13, 2004 Speaker:  Sherry Sylvester, TEXAS MEDIA WATCH

TEXAS MEDIA WATCH keeps a close watch on how the news is presented to our citizens.  The five major newspapers, in the five major cities, often slant the news with a negative liberal bias.  Texas has been the focus of news stories, such as redistricting and anything negative concerning the policies of President, George W. Bush.  Sherry Sylvester will cite questionable headlines, first paragraphs and statistics and how readers can get the truth.

Ann Witt won the Primary election for this district and will face Scott Hochberg, incumbent Democrat in November.

Michael McCaul gained 24% of the vote in the primary and will face Ben Streusand in the Run-off April 13.

Speaker: Ted Poe, United States Representative, Dist. 2

Ted Poe won 69% of the vote in Harris County and 61% in the state. Ted will face democrat Nick Lamson in the November election.

Speaker:  Mark Cole, "Let the People Vote" RECAP Charter Amendment

Let the People Vote is a non-partisan, political action committee formed to improve city government and limit the fat in the city budget.  The charter amendment requires voter approval before the city can increase total revenues, (including property taxes, water and sewer charges) more than the combined rates of increase of inflation and population.

Speaker:  Shelley Sekula Gibbs, Houston City Council 

The pension plans of city departments, as set up by previous City Administrations, have come under extreme scrutiny.  Shelley Sekula Goos will discuss the plans, their implications for tax payers and for city workers, and what can be don to maintain sound city financial responsibility.

Speaker: Steven G. Craig, Professor and Co-Director, Institute for Study of Political Economy, University of Houston

 

Steven Craig will discuss his research that shows recent tax increases have been largely wasted, and that tax rate increases are likely to depress property values.

Andy Kahan will bring us information and startling statistics concerning the Victims of Crime and how the Office of Crime Victims Assistance in our city can offer aid for our citizens.

Speaker:  Jon Eliot King, Attorney, will moderate a forum of six West Point Officers who have returned from duty in Iraq.  They will show slides and recount their experiences serving with the military in Iraq.

Speaker: Mayor Bill White, Mayor of our City of Houston

Mayor Bill White has submitted his first budget as Mayor. He also has introduced new programs and suggested cuts in personnel in several departments.  Mayor White will speak on ways our city government can bring greater fiscal economy and efficiency to our city government.

Speaker:  Harold Hurtt, Chief of Police, City of Houston 2004

Police Chief Hurtt will speak to us on the vision he sees for our city, as well as, problems in his role as Chief of Police in the fourth largest city in our nation.  
July 6, 2004  

Speaker:  Annise Parker, Controller City of Houston

The Office of the City Controller certifies the availability of funds prior to City Council approval of city commitments.  Annise Parker was sworn in as the cities 14th City Controller.  She will report on available funds and discuss issues which have been reported as creating concern for our city.

 

July 13, 2004  

Speaker:  Paul Bettencourt, Assessor & Collector of Taxes

County taxes are referred to as payment of money for the use of the County government.  Even though he is a collector of our taxes, Paul Bettencourt is considered a friend of tax payers.  Paul will discuss the issues involved in appraisal and assessing of taxes, particularly property taxes, in our area.

The pulse of the city is often revealed on talk radio, and Chris Baker, KPRC Radio Host from 2-6 P.M. does a great, in-depth review of what the people of Houston think about current issues, locally, as well as across the broad spectrum of our state and nation.

Chronicallybiased.com is a new internet newspaper, designed to expose the biased and false news reporting of popular media. Owen Courreges is the founding editor of this Internet news.

John is one of our bright and dedicated young Republicans. He will relate the challenges of students on college campuses to bring balance and information to broaden our party.

Speakers:  The Honorable Robert Eckels  and The Honorable Patricia R. Lykos

Judge Robert Eckels and the Honorable Pat Lykos will detail the DO THE WRITE THING CHALLENGE, which is an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence.  This successful Houston/Harris County effort is an effort to reduce youth violence in the United States.

Frank Stanley - U.S. Army 30 years, Army Reserve 10 years, 10 years active duty.  Frank's most recent tour of duty was assignment in Baghdad, Iraq, where he served as liaison to domestic intelligence agencies, foreign intelligence services and foreign Governments.  He is currently a Major serving as Deputy Intelligence Officer for the 75th Division, Army Reserve, the Division that captured Saddam Hussein.

Richard Lindley served as Engineering Officer on a River Boat in Viet Nam. River Boats were later assigned as Swift Boats at the time John Kerry was serving. He can recite stories about Kerry as a Swift Boat Skipper.

Michael Garfield hosts a Radio Program on KPRC 950 each Saturday afternoon. Michael runs a consulting firm focusing on emerging trends and insights. He will discuss the election and how issues in cyberspace affected the results.

John O'Neill, author "UNFIT for COMMAND", will be with us to recount his experiences during the election process to give information concerning John Kerry. John O'Neill was featured on many TV interviews and always revealed his commitment to tell the true story of John Kerry's service during and after the Viet Nam conflict.  His book, "UNFIT for COMMAND" will be available.

Dr. Evelyn Tobias-Merrill, a Physician from Corpus Christi, was forced to close her practice because her medical liability premiums became too costly.  She continues to work for Civil Justice Reform.
